Job Summary

The Summer Residential Director (SRD) is a live-in professional who facilitates, creates, maintains, and promotes a just, purposeful, and secure residential community supporting the learning mission of the Skidmore College Summer Academic Institute while enhancing residents’ academic and personal development. We are particularly interested in candidates from underrepresented groups that can add to the diversity and excellence of our academic program and community

RDs supervise Resident Assistants (RAs) and Teaching/Program Assistants (TPAs), coordinate their job responsibilities with other OP office staff, and oversee programming and tutoring hours. This position responds independently to emergency situations, serves on the on-call rotation for the residential community, and works collaboratively with the Coordinator of Summer Academic Institute. 

The SRD works closely with the Coordinator of Summer Academic Institute to provide an atmosphere that reinforces the educational and social objectives of the 2018 Summer Academic Institute. Responsibilities include: providing and attending assigned social, cultural, and recreational activities during the afternoons, evenings, and weekends; conducting nightly rounds to ensure the safety of all residents; maintaining an environment conducive to learning; providing personal, social, and academic peer counseling to students; assisting in the critical enforcement of policies, practices, and procedures; providing a reasonably safe learning environment for the students within the residence halls; encouraging students to take responsibility of their residence halls; attending regular weekly staff meetings; The Summer Residential Director shares in the responsibility of serving as a first responder to the professional staff during crisis and emergency response within the residence halls.

The Summer Residential Director will also be responsible for overseeing the academic tutoring aspects of the summer program. Responsibilities include: serving as the head advisor to the Residential Assistants and; serving as the coordinator for Teaching/Program Assistants; designing and implementing excel programs for the purpose of tracking tutor and tutee hours for required program reporting; maintaining a quiet educational setting during evening tutoring hours; coordinating nightly meetings with staff before the start of tutorial sessions; attending nightly tutorial sessions. The Head Residence Counselor is required to live in the residence hall for the duration of the five-week summer program including weekends, and participate in a week-long residential staff training preceding the summer program. It is essential that the SRD work collaboratively with the the Summer Academic Institute Residential and Teaching Assistant Staff as well as the Opportunity Program office staff. Other duties as assigned by the Director/Coordinator of Summer Academic Institute. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors Degree with Residential Life experience working with students from low-income and first-generation backgrounds. Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree with 3+ years of Residential Life experience working with students from low-income and/or first-generation backgrounds.
